The artist challenged himself to reproduce all the textures and colors of the pontiff's gorgeous vestments using metal alone. Cola cans were the source of color for the red robes, and ordinary tin cans were used for the background. The artist could not find "flesh-colored" cans, so he had to paint the metal that was used for the face.
